Better Independent Living

Living in any home, whether a standard home or a bungalow, can present challenges in certain areas and for certain tasks and functions that are necessary.

The advent of mobility aids and their huge growth in use over the last few years has been due to advances in technology and in the race for manufacturers to solve common household problems and generally make life safer and easier.

So what are these mobility aids and why have they become so popular?

In fact, many mobility aids are actually quite simple and they seek to solve some of the minor irritations and difficulties that can occur around the home for any of us whether able bodied or with any kind of disability.

Mobility aids are designed to work harmoniously with how we live and blend into our lives, simply to make many functions that we take for granted, that little bit easier and less time consuming.

An example of this can be seen in the use of footstools, this is because there are many areas in the home that need us to reach for things, think on top of kitchen cabinets, or fridges, in larders, in garages and in bedroom storage.

Although in most homes these distances we need to reach are not that high, they can none the less be difficult if you are not tall, or if you have a condition or disability that prevents you from stretching and reaching upwards safely.

Footstools give that little extra height enabling you to reach up to things when you need them with little hassle and yet providing a safe platform on which to stand so that the process of reaching and collecting an item can be carried out safely and with ease and comfort.

Similarly, furniture raisers, as with footstools can make access easier. It is often the case that furniture around the home can be of inconvenient heights and create difficulty in certain situations depending on the individual’s circumstances and level of mobility.

Furniture raisers simply raise the height of furniture to more accessible levels so making movement and use of the furniture easier. If for example, a bed is too low to the ground, then this can create difficulty and potentially a safety hazard in the home, as the height can be to low meaning there is a potential for strain or injury to the user in either lowering themselves to the bed, or indeed, in raising themselves up after sleeping or resting on the bed.

Furniture raisers provide the function of raising the height of the bed, or other piece of furniture to allow for easier and safer access, and it’s not just in the bedroom where the height of low level furniture can sometimes benefit from being raised an inch or too.

Even raising the height of furniture around the home can make quite a big difference to the usability of that furniture for the user.

Grab rails can provide an equally useful feature around the home as sometimes there are areas in the home that can be a fall hazard, or even in outside areas of the home where there are steps, or uneven surfaces.

Grab rails can provide reassurance and safety as well as a more comfortable way of getting around these risk areas without having to worry about falls and slips that can occur when there is no other support available.

As well as aids that help with accessibility and using the features around your home, sometimes the need can be for security and having your keys in a place that allows access to the home for authorised users, such as carers and family members, and also a safe place in which to store keys when they are not in use.

Key safes provide that essential function in the home and are also useful for landlords or holiday let owners who need safe storage and access solutions for their properties.

Key safes come in a range of styles and have many individual features and benefits that enable the safe storage of keys and sometimes other valuables that are protected with access controls so that only authorised people can get access to and use the keys.

So there you have a few ideas of how mobility aids can be of great help around the home, making it easier to live and enjoy your inside and outside spaces with comfort and ease, as well as increasing overall levels of safety.
