Why is it so hard to get in and out of my car?
06 Feb 2024
There are many reasons why getting in and out of a vehicle can be difficult. Not least, is the height of some vehicles, as some SUV types of cars can have quite a step up, or a more sportier model, may actually require quite a dip of the knees just to get into a position to enter the car space.
Many thousands of people find getting in and out of their vehicles causes difficulty and so if you are affected and it creates an additional source of stress in your daily travels, you are far from being alone.
So what are the aids that can help us use our vehicles with greater ease and with less chance of potential strain or injury?
In fact there are a plethora of mobility aids on the market to help us use our vehicles, and it’s often a better solution than having to go through the whole process of selling and then purchasing a different vehicle, with all of those additional stresses!
Car mobility aids are a great solution to many of the common difficulties that may be encountered on daily journeys, so they can be well worth a look.
Transfer cushions are a good example of this. Many people really struggle with the rotation required to get into the driving or passenger seat and move into a forward facing position.
As a result of grippy seats, sports contour styling and high sided seat cushions, the sensation of jarring and twisting can be experienced, and it should never have to be painful just to drive somewhere.
The transfer cushion is great, as it allows for a smooth swivel transfer, so alleviating much of the potential pain and discomfort.
It’s also a versatile piece of equipment, as it can be used in other scenarios in the home, such as transitioning from a bed to a chair or vice-versa.
Another handy stress saver, comes in the form of the seatbelt reacher, as it’s a fact that many people find it a real struggle to find and hold on to the seat belt once they are seated in their car.
The seat belt reacher makes reaching for the seat belt much easier as it effectively brings the strap of the seat belt much nearer so requiring less reach of the arms and shoulders and less twisting motion than is required without the use of this aid.
People with arthritis, shoulder pain or limited mobility will find the seat belt reacher a very welcome addition to their vehicle and one that can prevent potential injury and simply make travelling more enjoyable as well as speeding up journey times.
As well as the difficulties associated with entering the car, sometimes getting out of the vehicle can present difficulties, not least when you’ve been on a slightly longer journey and your legs and knee joints have settled in one position for an extended period of time.
The highly portable HandyBar is a simple yet strong and reliable mobility aid that makes getting both in and out of a vehicle so much easier.
it simply fits into the door catch to then provide safe and reliable leverage to enable the user to put weight on the bar and so ease their weight either in to, or out of the vehicle.
the HandyBar comes with a comfortable, soft and slip-resistant handle so it’s not only very useful, it’s also a comfort to use, without biting into the hands and allowing maximum weight bearing.
A very handy addition to this innovative gadget is a glass breaker, so that if in the unfortunate event of an accident, you can use the HandyBar to break the glass, allowing for safe and fast exit of the vehicle through the window of the vehicle.
Getting in and out of your car, or any other vehicle for that matter, may always be difficult for some, and ultimately, it can come down to choosing a different vehicle to suit your changing needs.
But if you only require a little additional help, the devices above many be a great choice to enable you to keep using the vehicle you love for as long as possible.
Alternatively, you may find these aids great if you are recovering from a short-term injury that has meant you are temporarily requiring the extra help.
